What is BMI?

Body mass index is a measure that determines whether your weight is appropriate for your height. It is calculated by dividing the weight in kilograms by the square of the height in metres.

BMI categories according to the World Health Organization

  • Under 18.5: ๐Ÿ”ต skinny
  • 18.5 - 24.9: ๐ŸŸข Normal weight
  • 25 - 29.9: ๐ŸŸก Weight gain
  • 30 - 34.9: ๐ŸŸ  Obesity, first degree
  • 35 - 39.9: ๐Ÿ”ด Second degree obesity
  • 40+: โšซ Excessive obesity
๐Ÿ“ example: A person whose weight is 70 kg and whose height is 175 cm = 70 รท (1.75)ยฒ = 22.86 (normal)
๐Ÿ’ก advice: BMI does not differentiate between muscle and fat. Athletes may appear overweight due to muscle mass.
